How to Convert WAV to MP3 for Free, Without Uploading Your Files
WAV files are excellent for recording and editing, but they are large. One minute of CD-quality stereo WAV takes about 10 MB, while the same minute saved as a 128 kbps MP3 takes about 1 MB. That is why people convert WAV to MP3 before emailing, uploading or storing recordings.
What actually changes when you convert WAV to MP3
A typical WAV file stores audio as uncompressed PCM: every sample is kept exactly as recorded. MP3 is a lossy format: the encoder discards details that are hard to hear so the file becomes much smaller. For speech, interviews and everyday listening, the difference is usually small at 128 kbps or higher. For editing, mastering or archiving, always keep the original WAV.
Step by step with Sayvoi Audio Converter
- Open convert.sayvoi.com.
- Drag your WAV files into the drop box, or tap it to choose files. You can select many files at once.
- Set the output format to MP3.
- Choose a bitrate (see the next section).
- Optionally change the sample rate or the number of channels.
- Press Convert all.
- Download each file, or use Download all (ZIP) to get them together.
Which bitrate should you choose?
- 64 kbps: very small files. Acceptable for voice-only recordings where quality is not critical.
- 96 to 128 kbps: a good default for speech, podcasts and everyday listening.
- 192 to 256 kbps: better for music and for recordings you may share widely.
- 320 kbps: the highest MP3 setting and the largest files.
A simple rule of thumb: speech rarely needs more than 128 kbps, while music benefits from 192 kbps and above. The file size follows directly from the bitrate: 128 kbps is about 0.96 MB per minute and 320 kbps is about 2.4 MB per minute.
Tips for better results
- Keep the original WAV. Converting back from MP3 to WAV does not restore the lost detail.
- Convert once, from the original. Converting MP3 to MP3 again lowers quality each time.
- Use Mono for single-voice recordings. With mono, the encoder spends its whole bit budget on one channel.
- Leave the sample rate on "Original" unless you have a reason to change it. If you do, read our guide to sample rates.
Common questions
Is it really free?
Yes. You can convert up to 15 files per day for free, without creating an account.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser, so your recordings stay on your device. We explain how this works in why you should not upload private recordings.
How large can the files be?
Files under 100 MB each are recommended, because your browser has to hold the audio in memory while converting.
